Drums and Painter are now Live

Condukt 1.4 is live, with two big new sequencers. During the beta we showed off Painter, which lets you draw a part straight onto the grid, and the Drum sequencer, an XOX-style trig grid for your rhythms. Both are in the release.

Painter is a sequencer you play by drawing. Add it to a board, pick a root note and a scale, and drag your finger or Apple Pencil across the grid. Everything you paint snaps to the key and chord you chose, so it stays musical even when you're just doodling. A chord shape sits behind every stroke, Apple Pencil pressure sets each note's velocity, and you can scrub the loop by hand or record the whole thing out as MIDI. It's the fastest way we've found to sketch a part and hear it come to life. Here's a closer look at Painter.

The Drum sequencer is a classic XOX-style trig grid built for rhythm. Each track gets its own note, instrument, and channel, so one control can drive a kick, a snare, and a hat across different synths. Swipe to lay down steps, dial in per-step velocity that you can read at a glance from each step's brightness, and stretch tracks to different lengths so they drift into polyrhythms. Drop a non-destructive Euclidean fill on any track to find a groove fast, and the Recorder captures every track at once so you can loop a beat and play right over it. Here's a closer look at the Drum sequencer.

A simpler way to try it, and to buy it

Condukt has always had a free way in. Until now that was a demo mode we ran ourselves, off to the side of the App Store and was a source of some confusion. In 1.4 it becomes something cleaner and built right in: download Condukt for free and you land on the Hello board, a full working board you can play and perform straight away to get a real feel for how Condukt moves. Editing and building your own boards is the part you unlock when you buy.

And buying is simpler now. Two options:

  • Monthly subscription, $4.99. Keep using the whole app without paying the full price up front. With a catch!
  • Lifetime license, $39.99. Buy once, own it forever, done.

The Catch

We avoided subscriptions since launch as we were told by many they don't want them. After we launched we were asked by many (most likely a different many) why we don't have a cheaper time-limited way to use the app for a month or two, since they didn't know if they wanted to buy the full thing.

So we came up with something new: subscribe monthly, use the whole app, decide in your own time whether you want to buy Lifetime. Once you do, we give you credit for the months you paid for, up to $30. So say you use the app for 3 months, you paid $15 and want to switch to Lifetime - it will now cost you $25.

This wasn't trivial to build but I think it will satisfy both camps. If you run into problems please reach out and let us know.

And if you already own Condukt

Nothing changes. You paid once, you own all of it, forever. Thank you for backing Condukt early, so we can keep building it.
